Keep Calm, i'm only Diabetic

Jonsel, 40, has lived hard and played hard as a professional footballer, pop star and actor. He’s now performing a one-man show about life with Type 1 diabetes called: Keep Calm, I am only Diabetic. He lives in Warwickshire where he was brought up by his father. His mother also has Type 1 diabetes and has recently had serious complications. I can’t remember feeling upset when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I had seen my mum, who also has Type 1, inject herself with insulin, so it seemed quite natural to me. I thought I could live with it.

Newspaper Article: HYPO

A Stratford actor who was registered with Stratford Town FC as a youngster and played professional football in Turkey is in the final stages of filming the story of his life as a sportsman battling type 1 diabetes. The condition cost Jon-Sel Gourkan, aged 41, his career playing football for Turkish clubside Altay who sacked him when he suffered a hypoglycaemic attack before a home game in the club’s dressing room. Hypo is the true film about Jon-Sel’s experience as a 17-year-old soccer star who was on Stratford Town’s books as a six-year-old and was also a child actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Stratford Town FC

Jon-sel did play for Stratford Town FC and the Under 18's when we were based at Masons Road, and this is where he was scouted before he went off to sign his contract.
The film has an excellent cast on board, Patrick Robinson from BBC's Casualty, Marcus Griffiths from Holby City. It also features ex pro footballer Gary Mabbutt and current pro Ben Coker who plays for Lincoln City. The film is the first of its kind, and will be shown at film festival's, Channel 4 short film festival, and has attracted interest from Sky & BBC telelvision. Diabetes UK and JDRF UK are fully supportive of the film, and a premiere will be shown in Stratford and London.
